Child Witness Centre Announces a new Executive Director!

WATERLOO REGION – The Board of Directors of the Child Witness Centre is pleased to announce the appointment of David Morneau as Executive Director as of January 13, 2020. This appointment follows the retirement of Laura Muirhead who provided leadership and inspiration for the past seven years, helping the organization grow and making a difference in the lives of many children and youth.

“The Board is excited to welcome David Morneau to lead the Child Witness Centre,” said Lisa Allen, Chair of the Board of Directors. “David brings a unique combination of skills to this position. His work as a collaborative legal professional and his passion for helping children and youth provide a strong foundation for his leadership of the Child Witness Centre. David will be instrumental in advancing our strategic plan and ensuring we provide critical services to children and youth who are victims of or witnesses to crime, empowering them toward strong futures.”

David joins the Child Witness Centre after more than 20 years running his successful family law practice where he focused on mediation and collaborative law. Most of his legal career was spent advocating for children and youth within the justice system and beyond, ensuring they were empowered and had a voice.

Throughout his career, David has been passionate about working with and providing a voice for children and youth. In 2018, through the Office of the Children’s Lawyer, he joined a specialized anti-human trafficking team. David has also worked with families in transition, as contract counsel for Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region, and as counsel for the Family Responsibility Office. While representing families, children and youth, David experienced the challenges faced by those trying to improve support for families and the delivery of services.

David has participated in the community in many volunteer positions including director roles with the Kitchener
Panthers, Owl Child Care Services, and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

David has an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of
Windsor. David, his wife and their children live in Waterloo.

“As the Executive Director, I’m excited about contributing to the continued growth and development of the Child Witness Centre,” said David. “I’m honoured to be leading an excellent team of staff who are dedicated to ensuring that young victims and witnesses of abuse and crime feel safe, valued and heard, giving them the support they need to move toward healthy futures.”

David is looking forward to meeting donors, volunteers and community partners over the coming months as he settles into his role at the Child Witness Centre.
