Monet the Facility Dog
Did you hear Monet turned 9 years old on June 14, 2025? Check out some pictures from her birthday party! 🐾 🥳
Meet Monet, a very important member of our team! She is the first accredited facility dog to work in the criminal justice system in the Region of Waterloo. Monet works alongside our frontline workers, supporting children and youth who are victims or witnesses of crime.
Since joining our team in early 2020, Monet has enhanced our trauma-informed practice to better support the emotional and mental health needs of our clients through the judicial process.
The benefits that Monet offers victimized young people and their families include:
- Provides non-judgmental comfort and support through a warm and healing touch.
- Adds a positive component to a typically difficult situation.
- Helps draw out healthy emotions, and normalize traumatic situations.
- Creates a positive association with Child Witness Centre and the rest of our team.
- Supports the mental health of everyone around her, reducing the impact of vicarious trauma.
Thank You to National Service Dogs
Monet was generously donated to us by National Service Dogs (NSD), as an accredited Canine Assisted Intervention (CAI) dog. The use of Facility Dogs with young people through the court process is one of the emerging, evidence informed best practices.
